Rock Climbing in Nepal

Nepal offers an exciting range of rock-climbing opportunities, perfect for both beginners and experienced climbers. If you’re short on time but still seek an adventure, rock climbing is a great alternative to scaling the Himalayas. The Nagarjun and Shivapuri hills provide ideal climbing spots, with natural rock outcrops ready to be conquered.

Within the Kathmandu Valley, the Shreeban Rock Climbing Nature Camp offers an excellent climbing experience. Beyond the valley, the cliffs of Siddha Lake in Dhading Nalang provide another thrilling option.

Nagarjun Hill, also known as Jamacho, is home to a popular climbing site inside the Royal Forest. Its 12-meter-high limestone face, equipped with piton routes, caters to all skill levels. The location is easily accessible via a short hike from Balaju, just 3 km from Kathmandu.

Another notable site is on the slopes of Shivapuri Hill, north of Kathmandu. Featuring scattered granite faces, this area offers a rugged and natural climbing environment. Accessible from Budhanilkantha, the route to the cliffs passes through scenic terraced fields and the Shivapuri Watershed and Wildlife Reserve.

Many of these rock-climbing spots are located in the north and northwest of Kathmandu, making it easy to combine your adventure with hiking, birdwatching, and scenic tours. The city itself also has artificial climbing walls, allowing you to sharpen your skills before tackling real rock faces in Nepal’s wild landscapes.
