Description: Embark on a scenic trekking journey through the heart of Bhutan, exploring its beautiful landscapes, ancient monasteries, and rich cultural heritage. This 22-day itinerary takes you from the picturesque Paro Valley to the rugged landscapes of Gasa, with stops at iconic landmarks such as Taktsang Monastery, Punakha Dzong, and Laya Village. Enjoy scenic treks, cultural immersion, and visits to historic sites, with a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation.

Detailed itinerary

Arrive at Paro and check-in to your hotel for an overnight stay.

  • Morning: Drive to Drugyel Dzong, offering a view of Chomolhari Mountain. Visit a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse.
  • Visit Rinpung Dzong, a historical fortress from 1645.
  • Lunch at the hotel.
  • Afternoon: Visit the National Museum (Ta-Dzong) and Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan.

  • Drive to the road end at Drugyal Dzong, where your trek begins.
  • Follow the river uphill through a valley of paddy fields, passing traditional farmhouses.
  • Camp at an army outpost.
  • Altitude: 2800 m.
  • Distance: 17 km.
  • Time: 5-6 hours.

  • Continue uphill through a narrowing valley.
  • Most of the trail is downhill after the initial climb.
  • Camp in a meadow with a stone shelter.
  • Altitude: Approx. 3400 m.
  • Distance: 15 km.
  • Time: 4-5 hours.

  • Walk along the Paro River, passing a small army outpost.
  • Camp beneath a ruined fortress at the base of Jhomolhari Mountain.
  • Altitude: 4040 m.
  • Distance: 19 km.
  • Time: 5-6 hours.

  • Walk toward the pass and descend into the Lingshi basin.
  • View Lingshi Dzong and Tserim Kang mountain.
  • Camp at a stone shelter with a fire pit.
  • Altitude: 4150 m.
  • Distance: 19 km.
  • Time: 5-6 hours.

  • Shorter walking day. Visit village houses at Chebisa.
  • Altitude: 3850 m.
  • Distance: 12 km.
  • Time: 3-4 hours.

  • Walk across pastureland towards Gobu-la pass, descending into the valley.
  • Camp beside a river tributary of Nochu River.
  • Altitude: 4260 m.
  • Distance: 17 km.
  • Time: 5-6 hours.

  • Cross Jarela pass and descend into Tsarijathang Valley, home to herds of Takins.
  • Camp at Tsarijathang.
  • Altitude: 4390 m.
  • Distance: 15 km.
  • Time: 6-7 hours.

  • Cross Shingela pass and descend into the valley.
  • Camp in Lemithang, under the Laya District.
  • Altitude: 4140 m.
  • Distance: 19 km.
  • Time: 6-7 hours.

  • Walk downhill to Laya village, camp above the village.
  • Altitude: 3850 m.
  • Distance: 10 km.
  • Time: 3-4 hours.

Rest day in Laya. Explore the village and its unique culture.

  • Wind up and down along the river valley, passing waterfalls and streams.
  • Camp at Koena.
  • Altitude: 3800 m.
  • Distance: 19 km.
  • Time: 6-7 hours.

  • Cross the Babela pass, then descend to Gasa Dzong.
  • Camp near Gasa Dzong.
  • Altitude: 2900 m.
  • Distance: 17 km.
  • Time: 6-7 hours.

  • Short trek to Gasa Tsachu, relax in the popular hot springs.
  • Camp at Gasa Tsachu.

  • Climb and pass through pine and oak forests, passing villages and fields.
  • Camp at Geon Damji.
  • Altitude: 2280 m.
  • Distance: 21 km.
  • Time: 6-7 hours.

  • Descend into a semi-tropical gorge with tropical vegetation.
  • Camp at Tashithang.
  • Altitude: 1700 m.
  • Distance: 17 km.
  • Time: 6-7 hours.

  • Drive to Punakha and visit Punakha Dzong.
  • Lunch in Punakha.

  • Visit the Memorial Chorten, National Library, Wood Craft and Painting School, and Handicrafts Emporium.
  • Explore Simtokha Dzong and Tashichho Dzong.

  • Visit Dechenchholing Palace and Monastery.
  • Drive back to Paro.

  • Drive to Satsam Chorten and hike to Taktsang Monastery.
  • Enjoy a picnic lunch and explore the monastery.
  • Round trip hike: 4 hours.

Drive to Paro Airport for departure.
