Tibet, the roof of the world, is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, ancient Buddhist culture, and spiritual significance. With an average altitude of over 3,500 meters, Tibet is home to some of the most stunning sights on the planet. Lhasa, the capital, serves as the heart and soul of this extraordinary region. Despite its Chinese influence, the city retains its cultural charm, with iconic landmarks such as the Potala Palace and bustling local markets. The sacred temples and monasteries, including Jokhang and Drepung, offer an unparalleled opportunity to immerse oneself in the Tibetan Buddhist way of life.
On this unforgettable journey, we stay in the best traditional Tibetan hotels, providing an authentic experience while remaining close to the major attractions. We explore the beauty and spiritual richness of Lhasa and beyond, with stops in Gyantse and Shigatse, where we further discover Tibet's sacred monasteries.
Upon arrival at Gonggar Airport, your professional Tibetan guide will meet you and assist with immigration formalities. A scenic 1.5-hour drive will take you along the 93 km road to Lhasa, situated at an altitude of 3,650 meters. You’ll have the rest of the day to rest and acclimatize to the high-altitude environment.
After a nourishing breakfast, embark on your first full day of exploration in Lhasa. The first stop is Sera Monastery, one of Tibet’s most important and well-preserved monasteries. Your guide will provide insight into Tibetan Buddhism, allowing you to connect deeply with the spiritual history of the region. After lunch, visit Norbulingka, the former summer palace of the Dalai Lama, known for its beautiful gardens and Tibetan architecture. Next, you’ll explore Jokhang Temple, a significant pilgrimage site for Tibetan Buddhists, before wandering through the lively Barkhor Market, where you can shop for Tibetan handicrafts and souvenirs. After a full day of sightseeing, return to your hotel for a well-deserved rest.
After breakfast, embark on a visit to the Potala Palace, the most iconic landmark in Tibet. This majestic structure once served as the winter residence of the Dalai Lama and offers panoramic views of Lhasa. The palace’s unique Tibetan murals, stupas, and the tombs of past Dalai Lamas offer fascinating insights into Tibetan culture and religion. Afterward, continue to Drepung Monastery, one of the largest and most influential monasteries in Tibet, where you’ll witness monks and nuns engaged in Buddhist teachings and rituals. Conclude the day with a return to your hotel, followed by dinner and a peaceful evening.
Leave Lhasa behind and drive through the picturesque Yarlung Tsangpo River Valley towards Tsedang, the third-largest city in Tibet. Along the way, stop at Nyethang Monastery, a 10th-century site built by the Indian Buddhist scholar Atisha. This monastery is known for its historical importance and intriguing artifacts. Continue the journey with a visit to Mindroling Monastery, renowned for its contributions to Tibetan astronomy, astrology, medicine, and calligraphy. The monastery’s murals are significant in representing the teachings of Tantric Buddhism. After arriving in Tsedang, check into your hotel and relax.
Today, explore the Yarlung Valley, often referred to as the "Valley of Tombs" due to its ancient burial sites. The valley is believed to be the birthplace of Tibetan civilization. Begin with a visit to Trandruk Monastery, a 7th-century site that features exceptional wood carvings and murals. Continue to Yambulkang Castle, perched on a hilltop above the valley, offering a stunning view of the surrounding landscape. The castle is considered the oldest known structure in Tibet and is believed to have once served as the residence of the Yarlung kings. Afterward, take a boat trip across the Tsangpo River to visit the impressive Samye Monastery, founded in 779 AD. This monastery is one of Tibet’s most important historical and spiritual sites, designed to represent the Buddhist universe with its pagodas and temples. Return to Tsedang in the evening for rest.
After a final breakfast in Tsedang, your guide will escort you to the airport for your flight home. You’ll have time to reflect on the unforgettable experiences and spiritual journey you’ve had in Tibet.
