More Information
Makalu, standing at 8,481 meters, is the fifth-highest peak in the world, situated in the heart of the eastern Himalayas. Despite being only 14 miles east of Mount Everest, Makalu remains relatively isolated, offering an unparalleled climbing challenge. The mountain features a stunning symmetrical structure with four prominent ridges and deep surrounding valleys, including the Arun Valley, which descends as low as 435 meters above sea level. The ascent to Makalu, including the approach, requires a total elevation gain of over 8,000 meters, making it a demanding yet rewarding expedition.
The Makalu-Barun National Park, home to the expedition route, is a pristine wilderness with diverse flora and fauna. The region is inhabited by ethnic communities such as the Rai, Sherpa, and Shingsawa (Bhotia), who have preserved their unique cultural traditions. Due to its remoteness, the Makalu region remains relatively unexplored, offering an authentic and immersive adventure for climbers seeking an unforgettable Himalayan experience.
