The Lower Dolpo region, including the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve and Shey Phoksundo National Park, is situated in the rain shadow area of the central north-western Himalayas in Nepal. This remote and rugged wilderness offers some of the most pristine trekking landscapes in Nepal, with vast expanses of untouched nature, diverse flora and fauna, and a serene atmosphere. The trek takes you across various passes, through lush jungles and ravines, and over the Himalayan main chain. The trek is a perfect blend of nature, culture, and adventure, ideal for those seeking a challenging yet rewarding journey.
About Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve: Dhorpatan is located on the southern slopes of Mount Dhaulagiri (8167m) in the Baglung District of the Mid-Western Region of Nepal. The Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve, which spans 1,325 sq. km, is famous for being the only designated hunting reserve in Nepal, although hunting is highly regulated. The reserve is home to various wildlife species, including the Himalayan tahr, musk deer, and the rare snow leopard. Trekking through this area provides a unique opportunity to experience the wilderness at its best while respecting the ecological balance.
Upon your arrival in Kathmandu, you will be welcomed by our team and transferred to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day relaxing or exploring the vibrant capital city at your own leisure.
After breakfast, enjoy a guided sightseeing tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu, including Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple), Boudhanath Stupa, Pashupatinath Temple, and Kathmandu Durbar Square. These sites showcase the rich cultural and historical heritage of Nepal.
Embark on a scenic drive to Beni, the gateway to the trek. The journey takes approximately 7-8 hours, passing through picturesque villages, terraced fields, and the lush greenery of the hilly region. Upon arrival in Beni, rest and prepare for the trek.
The trek begins today as you follow the trail from Beni to Babiyachaur. The trail winds through dense forests, crossing small rivers and streams, with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. You will camp in Babiyachaur for the night.
Continue trekking through the forests and local villages, gradually gaining altitude as you make your way to Darbang. The village offers great views of the Dhaulagiri range, and you will rest here for the night.
From Darbang, trek to Muna, passing through diverse landscapes of dense forest, ridges, and local settlements. The path is scenic and relatively moderate, offering glimpses of traditional Nepali rural life.
The trek continues to Moreni, a small settlement surrounded by forests. Along the way, you’ll notice the terrain becoming more rugged as you enter the higher altitudes. Moreni offers a peaceful setting to rest and acclimatize.
Today is a challenging day as you ascend to the Jaljala Pass (3,480m), which provides panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges. After crossing the pass, descend to the beautiful Gurjaghat, where you will set up camp for the night.
From Gurjaghat, trek to Dhorpatan, the headquarters of the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve. This area is rich in wildlife and offers a serene atmosphere. You will spend the night in Dhorpatan.
The trail today takes you from Dhorpatan to Phagane Dhuri, where you will encounter lush forests and alpine meadows. From here, continue your trek to the village of Thakur for an overnight stay.
Trek from Thakur to Pelma, a small settlement located in a picturesque valley. The path is scenic and offers an opportunity to experience local culture and lifestyle.
Today, the trek leads you from Pelma to Dhule, a charming village nestled in the Himalayan foothills. You will pass through forests, streams, and local farming terraces.
Trek from Dhule to Seng Khola, which is located along a river. The trail offers beautiful views of the surrounding hills and valleys as you descend toward the river.
From Seng Khola, the trail ascends to Panidal La (a high mountain pass), offering sweeping views of the surrounding peaks. After crossing the pass, descend toward Purbang, where you will camp for the night.
The trek continues with a climb to Jangla Pass (3,300m), a high point offering dramatic views. From there, descend toward Tarakot, a historical settlement rich in Tibetan culture.
From Tarakot, trek to Lahini, a small village located along the riverbank. Enjoy the peaceful surroundings and traditional architecture of the village.
Trek from Lahini to Tarap Khola, following the river trail. This is a scenic part of the trek, with views of the pristine wilderness and high peaks.
Continue along the Tarap Khola River, reaching a higher elevation as you make your way to the second part of Tarap Khola. This area is less frequented by trekkers, offering a sense of solitude.
From Tarap Khola II, trek to Lang Khola, a scenic spot that marks another milestone on your journey through the remote Dolpo region. The trail continues to climb, offering stunning views of the rugged terrain.
Today, trek from Lang Khola to the village of Dho. The path becomes more challenging as you ascend to higher altitudes, but the breathtaking views make it worthwhile.
The trail today takes you to Num La Phedi, the base of the Num La Pass. It’s a day for acclimatization and preparation for the challenging ascent ahead.
Ascend the Num La Pass (4,800m), which offers panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. After crossing the pass, descend to Baga La Phedi for an overnight stay.
The trek continues with an ascent to the Baga La Pass (5,100m), one of the highest points of the trek. After crossing the pass, descend to Yak Kharka, a scenic plateau offering stunning views.
Trek from Yak Kharka to the beautiful Phoksundo Lake, one of the most pristine alpine lakes in Nepal. The lake’s turquoise waters, surrounded by dramatic cliffs, create a serene and tranquil atmosphere.
Spend a full day exploring the area around Phoksundo Lake. You can hike around the lake, enjoy the views, and visit the nearby villages.
Begin the trek from Phoksundo Lake and head towards Rechi. The trail passes through dense forests and valleys, offering glimpses of local wildlife and villages along the way.
From Rechi, continue your trek to the village of Chhepka, which offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and a glimpse into the local culture.
Trek from Chhepka to Dunai, the administrative center of Dolpo. The route offers stunning views of the landscapes as you descend toward the lower elevations.
The trek continues from Dunai to Juphal, where you will spend the night. This marks the final stretch of the trek before returning to Kathmandu.
Fly from Juphal to Nepalgunj, followed by a flight back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel for rest and relaxation.
Enjoy a free day in Kathmandu for personal activities such as shopping, exploring the city, or relaxing.
After breakfast, you will be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport for your departure flight, concluding your memorable trek in Lower Dolpo.
