Rara Lake Trek is a mesmerizing journey into the remote and unspoiled northwest region of Nepal. Known for its pristine waters, breathtaking mountain views, and rich biodiversity, Rara Lake is Nepal’s largest lake, offering a truly off-the-beaten-path adventure. This trek is perfect for those seeking solitude, natural beauty, and cultural encounters with local villages that remain untouched by modern influences.

Traversing through lush pine, spruce, and juniper forests, we experience a diverse range of Himalayan flora and fauna, including rare wildlife such as the Himalayan black bear, red panda, musk deer, and various species of birds. The trek provides spectacular views of Dolpo, Mugu, and the Tibetan border ranges, making it a rewarding journey for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.

Our adventure begins in Jumla, the largest hill town in western Nepal. The trail leads through scenic valleys, high mountain passes, and traditional villages before reaching the pristine Rara Lake (2,980m/9,837ft). After spending a day exploring the tranquil surroundings of the lake, we gradually descend back to Jumla and return to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj.

This trek is strenuous and requires camping along the route, making it ideal for experienced trekkers looking for an adventure away from the crowded trails of Nepal.

Detailed itinerary

Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by your guide or representative who will transfer you to your hotel. You can spend the rest of the day at leisure, either relaxing or exploring the vibrant Thamel area, famous for its restaurants, shops, and local culture. Overnight stay at a hotel in Kathmandu.

After breakfast, you will embark on a full-day sightseeing tour of Kathmandu. The city boasts a rich history and is home to many UNESCO World Heritage Sites. You will visit iconic landmarks like:

  • Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple): An ancient stupa offering a panoramic view of the city.
  • Pashupatinath Temple: A sacred Hindu temple along the Bagmati River.
  • Boudhanath Stupa: One of the largest stupas in Nepal, a center for Tibetan Buddhism.
  • Durbar Square: A historic plaza filled with ancient palaces, temples, and statues. You’ll learn about the history, culture, and religion of Nepal before returning to your hotel for the night.

After breakfast, you will take a domestic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj in the western Terai region of Nepal. The flight takes about an hour. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel in Nepalgunj, where you can relax for the rest of the day. Nepalgunj is a bustling town known for its border trade with India. You can explore the local markets, or simply rest for the upcoming trek. Overnight stay in Nepalgunj.

On this day, you will board a domestic flight from Nepalgunj to Jumla, a scenic town in the Karnali region of Nepal. The flight is about 30-40 minutes. Upon arrival, you will meet your trekking team and prepare for the trek. Jumla is known for its rich culture and historical significance, situated at the foot of the Himalayas. After arriving, you can explore the town, its local architecture, and enjoy the cool climate. Overnight stay in Jumla.

 

The adventure begins with a trek from Jumla to Chere Chaur, which will take about 5-6 hours of trekking. You will walk through traditional villages and lush forests of pine and juniper, with occasional views of snow-capped peaks in the distance. The trail will pass through terraced fields, where locals are often seen farming. As you ascend, the vegetation changes, with more alpine meadows and fewer trees. You will cross a few rivers and streams along the way, adding to the scenic beauty of the trek.

Upon reaching Chere Chaur, you will be treated to a stunning view of the surrounding valleys and mountains. Chere Chaur is a beautiful high-altitude meadow that serves as a perfect stop for acclimatization and relaxation. Overnight stay at a camping site or basic teahouse.

  • Distance: 5-6 hours of trekking
  • Elevation Gain: 2,550m to 3,100m

On Day 6, the trek continues from Chere Chaur to Danphe Langa, which takes about 6-7 hours. The trail gradually ascends through dense forests of rhododendron, pine, and oak trees. As you climb higher, the trail becomes steeper, and you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and valleys.

You will also cross several small rivers and streams that add a refreshing touch to the trek. As you approach Danphe Langa, the terrain opens up into a large meadow with alpine flowers and grazing livestock, providing an idyllic setting for camping. The high-altitude meadow is named after the Danphe (Himalayan Monal), a colorful pheasant that can sometimes be spotted in the area.

Upon arrival at Danphe Langa, you will set up camp and enjoy the serene atmosphere of the area. This location is perfect for photography, as the meadow is surrounded by towering peaks. You’ll have a chance to relax, explore the surrounding area, or even try to spot wildlife such as pheasants and musk deer. Overnight stay at a camping site.

  • Distance: 6-7 hours of trekking
  • Elevation Gain: 3,100m to 3,500m

Day 7 is a rest day at Danphe Langa for acclimatization to the altitude. This day is important for your body to adjust to the higher elevations before continuing the trek. You can take a short hike around the meadow, enjoy the panoramic views, or simply relax and absorb the natural beauty of the surroundings.

This day also offers an excellent opportunity for photography. You may see Himalayan Monal pheasants, along with other wildlife species such as snow leopards, red pandas, and various bird species. If you're interested in exploring, there are short hikes in the area that offer even more spectacular views of the nearby mountains.

After a relaxing day, you’ll spend another night camping at Danphe Langa, ensuring that you are well-rested and ready for the next stage of your trek.

  • Elevation: 3,500m

On Day 8, you will trek towards Chautha. The journey is scenic, passing through green forests and small villages, as you gradually make your way higher into the mountains. As you climb, the landscape changes, and you will begin to notice the stunning snow-capped peaks in the distance. Chautha is known for its serene surroundings, providing a peaceful retreat. On Day 9, the trek continues toward Dhotu. This day’s trek is a little more strenuous as you make your way to higher altitudes, offering spectacular views of the surrounding valleys and mountains. You’ll pass through picturesque villages, lush forests, and alpine meadows. Dhotu, a small village, will be your stop for the night. The village offers beautiful views of the surrounding peaks, providing the perfect spot for rest and relaxation. Overnight in Dhotu.

After breakfast, you will continue your trek towards the mesmerizing Rara Lake, the largest lake in Nepal. The trail will take you through dense forests, open meadows, and past traditional villages. The journey will be long but rewarding as you reach the lake, known for its clear blue waters and breathtaking surroundings. The tranquil beauty of Rara Lake is unparalleled, and it’s the perfect place to unwind and enjoy nature. After reaching the lake, you can explore the area and take in the serene atmosphere. Today, you will take a well-deserved rest day to explore the beautiful surroundings of Rara Lake. You can hike around the lake, enjoy the view of snow-capped mountains reflecting on its surface, and immerse yourself in the tranquility of the area. There are several trails around the lake that offer breathtaking views and opportunities for photography. You may also interact with the locals to learn about the culture and traditions of the area. Overnight stay near the lake.

On Day 12, you will begin your trek towards Ghorasingha. The trail takes you through forests, rivers, and meadows as you descend towards lower altitudes. The journey is scenic and offers great views of the surrounding landscapes. You will camp or stay in basic lodges at Ghorasingha, a small settlement nestled in a beautiful valley. The night is peaceful and quiet, ideal for relaxing after a day of trekking.

Today’s trek descends back to Jumla, marking the completion of our circuit. Spend the evening reflecting on the journey and interacting with locals.

A morning flight takes us back to Nepalgunj, followed by a connecting flight to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, transfer to the hotel and enjoy a farewell dinner.
