Upper Dolpo is one of the most remote and least developed regions in Nepal, offering a truly off-the-beaten-path trekking experience. Isolated from the rest of the country, this mystical land retains its Tibetan Buddhist heritage, with its rugged landscapes, centuries-old monasteries, and breathtaking high-altitude scenery. The trek from Dolpo to Jomsom takes you through dramatic mountain passes, pristine alpine lakes, and traditional villages, where the local way of life remains untouched by modernity.
This trek provides a rare opportunity to explore an untouched Himalayan sanctuary, home to rare wildlife like blue sheep and snow leopards. The route covers the culturally rich villages of Tarap, Shey Gompa, Saldang, and Chharka Bhot before reaching the trans-Himalayan region of Jomsom.
Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you will be greeted at Tribhuvan International Airport and transferred to your hotel. In the evening, attend a briefing about the trek. Overnight stay in Kathmandu.
Explore Kathmandu’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), Boudhanath Stupa, Pashupatinath Temple, and Kathmandu Durbar Square. Prepare for the trek with last-minute shopping. Overnight stay in Kathmandu.
Take a scenic flight to Nepalgunj, a bustling city in western Nepal near the Indian border. Rest and prepare for the journey ahead. Overnight stay in Nepalgunj.
Board a morning flight to Jumla, the gateway to Dolpo. Spend the rest of the day acclimatizing and exploring the local market. Overnight stay in Jumla.
Begin trekking through terraced fields and forests, gradually ascending to Ghoti Chaur. The trail offers stunning views of the surrounding hills. Overnight camping at Ghoti Chaur.
Continue trekking through dense pine and oak forests before reaching the remote village of Naphu Khona. The cultural influence of Tibetan Buddhism becomes evident. Overnight camping.
Cross the Mauri La Pass, enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding mountains before descending to Chaurikot Gaon. Overnight camping.
The trail leads through lush forests and alpine meadows before reaching Hurikot, a small settlement with a monastery. Overnight camping.
Walk along the beautiful trails passing several small settlements before reaching Toijum. Overnight camping.
Gradually ascend towards the base of Kagmara Pass. The trail offers glimpses of blue sheep grazing on steep slopes. Overnight camping.
A challenging day crossing the high Kagmara Pass, rewarded with awe-inspiring views. Descend to Lasen. Overnight camping.
Reach the Tibetan-style village of Ringmo near the stunning Phoksundo Lake. Overnight camping.
A day to explore the breathtaking turquoise waters of Phoksundo Lake and visit the Bon monastery. Overnight camping.
Descend through the forested trail to a serene camping site in Sallaghari. Overnight camping.
Gradually ascend towards the base of Kang La Pass. Overnight camping.
A challenging climb over Kang La Pass leads to the mystical Shey Gompa, known as the ‘Crystal Monastery.’ Overnight camping.
Cross another high-altitude pass, Sela La, and reach Namgung, a traditional Tibetan village. Overnight camping.
Continue through remote landscapes to the largest settlement in Upper Dolpo, Saldang. Overnight camping.
