Nestled deep within the Makalu-Barun National Park, the Makalu Base Camp Trek is an extraordinary journey through one of Nepal’s most pristine and diverse landscapes. Seven valleys radiate from Mount Makalu (8,463m), the world’s fifth-highest peak, offering breathtaking views, untouched forests, and alpine meadows teeming with rare flora and fauna.

Starting at just 435m above sea level in the Arun Valley, this trek climbs dramatically to Makalu Base Camp (4,870m) in a short distance of 40 km, making it a true adventure for those who seek remote and untouched Himalayan landscapes. The trek passes through subtropical forests, traditional Sherpa and Rai villages, rhododendron-clad ridges, and high-altitude glaciers, showcasing Nepal’s incredible biodiversity.

Detailed itinerary

Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you’ll be greeted and transferred to your hotel. In the evening, attend a pre-trek briefing followed by a welcome dinner.

Visit UNESCO-listed heritage sites, including Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, and Kathmandu Durbar Square. Prepare for the trek in the evening.

A scenic flight to Tumlingtar, followed by a gentle trek through terraced fields and small settlements to Khadbari, a bustling town with stunning mountain views.

The trail ascends gradually through forests and small villages, reaching Chichila, a picturesque village with spectacular Himalayan views.

A scenic trek through rhododendron forests and terraced fields, descending towards Num, a ridge-top village with panoramic mountain views.

A steep descent to the Arun River, followed by a climb through lush forests to reach Seduwa, the entrance to Makalu-Barun National Park.

We pass through small settlements and terraced fields, gradually ascending to Tashi Gaon, the last permanent village before high-altitude terrain.

A challenging day with a steep ascent through forests and meadows, reaching Kauma, a high-altitude campsite with stunning mountain views.

To adjust to the increasing altitude, we spend the day resting or hiking to nearby ridges for panoramic views of Makalu, Everest, and Chamlang.

A rugged trail takes us over Kauma La Pass, offering breathtaking views before descending through dense forests to Mumbuk.

We enter the Barun Valley, walking through pine forests and yak pastures, reaching Neha Kharka, a beautiful campsite by the Barun River.

The trek follows the Barun River, with the landscape changing to glacial valleys and alpine terrain, leading to Shershon, the gateway to Makalu Base Camp.

A short but breathtaking trek takes us to Makalu Base Camp, offering up-close views of Mount Makalu, Everest, Lhotse, and Baruntse.

A full day to explore the base camp area, take short hikes to nearby ridges, and soak in the majestic panoramic views of the Himalayas.

We begin our descent, retracing our steps through Shershon and the Barun Valley, arriving back at Neha Kharka.

A gradual descent through forests and glacial rivers, returning to Mumbuk.

Climbing back over the Kauma La Pass, we return to Kauma, enjoying our last high-altitude trek before descending further.

A long descent through rhododendron and oak forests, leading back to the familiar Sherpa village of Tashi Gaon.

We continue our descent, passing through lush vegetation and crossing rivers, reaching Num.

Following the Arun River, we trek to Mane Bhanjyang, a scenic village with terraced fields and traditional houses.

Our final trekking day leads us back to Tumlingtar, where we celebrate our Makalu Base Camp adventure.

A scenic flight back to Kathmandu, followed by a transfer to your hotel for a well-deserved rest.
