The Ganja La Pass Trek is a thrilling journey that connects the Langtang Valley to the Helambu region of Nepal. This trek takes you through remote villages, dense forests, and offers stunning panoramic mountain views, culminating at the challenging Ganja La Pass (5,130 meters). This trek requires good physical preparation, as the high altitude and remote nature of the pass make it a more demanding adventure. The trek provides a unique opportunity to experience Tamang culture, Buddhist heritage, and untouched natural beauty.

Detailed itinerary

Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport and transfer to your hotel. Relax and prepare for the trek. In the evening, attend a briefing session where you will be introduced to the trek and the required gear.

Explore Kathmandu Valley's UNESCO-listed heritage sites, including:

  • Pashupatinath Temple
  • Boudhanath Stupa
  • Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple)
  • Kathmandu Durbar Square
  • Use this day to complete any final preparations for the trek.

Travel by private vehicle to Dhunche, a small town at the entrance of the Langtang Valley. This scenic drive offers stunning views of rivers, terraced fields, and mountain landscapes. Overnight in Dhunche.

From Dhunche, continue on foot towards Syabrubesi. Trek through dense forests, passing small Tamang villages. Arrive in Syabrubesi, a quaint village, and settle for the night.

Trek through rhododendron forests alongside the Langtang River. The trail gradually ascends towards Lama Hotel, a popular overnight stop for trekkers.

Ascend further into the Langtang Valley, passing through picturesque villages and lush forests. The majestic Langtang Lirung (7,227 meters) looms over the valley. Reach Langtang Village for an overnight stay.

Trek towards Kyangjin Gompa, a historic Buddhist monastery located at 3,800 meters. Enjoy views of Langtang Lirung and other towering peaks. Overnight at Kyangjin Gompa.

Spend the day exploring the Kyangjin Gompa and its surroundings. Take a short hike to Kyangjin Ri or Tsergo Ri for spectacular panoramic views of the Langtang range. This day will also allow you to acclimatize to the altitude.

Begin the trek from Kyangjin Gompa and head towards Ngenang, a small settlement that offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Rest overnight in Ngenang.

From Ngenang, begin the ascent towards the Ganja La Pass Base Camp. This section of the trek is quite challenging due to its steep terrain. Upon reaching base camp, rest and prepare for the crossing of the Ganja La Pass the following day.

After an early morning start, cross the Ganja La Pass (5,130 meters). The pass offers incredible views of Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, and Shishapangma. The descent is steep and requires caution. Reach Tarke Gyang, one of the largest Tamang settlements in the Helambu region, for an overnight stay.

Trek to Sermathang, passing through dense forests and traditional villages along the way. From Sermathang, drive back to Kathmandu, where the trek concludes.
