The Gosainkunda Trek is one of the most accessible and culturally enriching treks near Kathmandu. It offers a remarkable combination of natural beauty, serene landscapes, and deep cultural significance. Gosainkunda Lake, a revered site for both Hindu and Buddhist communities, draws pilgrims seeking spiritual solace, especially during festivals like Janai Purnima in August, when the lake becomes a vibrant gathering spot. Pilgrims come to wash away their sins in the sacred waters, and Jhankris (Shaman priests) gather to perform traditional trance dances, accompanied by singing and drumbeats, creating a mystical atmosphere.

This trek takes you through diverse landscapes—dense forests, cascading waterfalls, turbulent rivers, alpine meadows, and barren mountainsides. As you approach the lake, you will be surrounded by towering peaks that offer an unforgettable view. The lake itself, nestled at the foot of high mountains, is considered one of the most sacred and stunning destinations in Nepal, making this trek a journey of both physical challenge and spiritual immersion.

Why Choose Gosainkunda Trek?

  • Cultural Richness: Experience the blend of Hindu and Buddhist traditions and witness the vibrant pilgrimage activities at Gosainkunda Lake.

  • Spiritual Significance: Gosainkunda is one of the holiest sites in Nepal, offering trekkers a spiritual journey combined with stunning natural scenery.

  • Accessible & Scenic: The trek is relatively short but offers a challenging yet rewarding adventure, perfect for those seeking a blend of culture, spirituality, and outdoor exploration.
Detailed itinerary

Upon your arrival in Kathmandu, you will be welcomed by our representative and transferred to your hotel. After checking in, you can relax and take in the sights of the vibrant capital city. Depending on your arrival time, you may have the option to explore local markets or enjoy a traditional Nepalese dinner. Overnight stay in Kathmandu.

After breakfast, we will begin the drive from Kathmandu to Sundarijal, which is located about 1.5 hours away. From here, the trek begins, taking you through lush forests and terraced fields. The path gradually ascends towards Chisapani, offering stunning views of the Himalayas. Chisapani is a small village known for its panoramic mountain views, and it serves as the perfect place to acclimatize to the altitude. Overnight stay in Chisapani.

Today, we trek from Chisapani to Kutumsang. The trail offers a picturesque journey through dense oak and rhododendron forests, along with beautiful alpine landscapes. As you ascend, the views of the Langtang and Ganesh Himal ranges become increasingly spectacular. Kutumsang is a small village where trekkers often stop for the night. The overnight stay here provides a chance to experience the local culture.

On this day, we trek from Kutumsang to Tharepati, a village situated at a higher altitude. The route offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains, and as you pass through small villages, you can interact with the friendly locals. Tharepati, positioned on a ridge, offers incredible views of the Langtang, Helambu, and Ganesh Himal ranges. The landscape changes as you approach alpine meadows and sparse vegetation.

Today’s trek takes you to Gosainkunda Phedi (the base of Gosainkunda Lake). The trail ascends through rhododendron forests and rocky paths, offering scenic vistas along the way. As you approach Phedi, the high-altitude terrain becomes more barren, and you begin to feel the spiritual energy of the area. Gosainkunda Phedi is a common rest stop for trekkers before they ascend to the lake. Overnight stay at Gosainkunda Phedi.

The highlight of the trek—Gosainkunda Lake—is reached today. After breakfast, we make the final ascent to the lake, which sits at an altitude of 4,380 meters (14,370 feet). The journey to the lake offers spectacular views of snow-capped peaks and alpine meadows. Gosainkunda is a sacred site for both Hindus and Buddhists and is surrounded by towering mountains, creating a breathtaking panorama. Pilgrims visit the lake to cleanse themselves spiritually, and many trekkers choose to circumnavigate the lake, which takes about 45 minutes. The area is serene and peaceful, making it an unforgettable experience.

After exploring the sacred lake, we begin our descent back to Dhunche. The trail retraces some of the steps from earlier in the trek, but the views remain just as spectacular. The descent offers a chance to reflect on the journey while enjoying the changing landscapes as you descend from the high mountains to the lower elevations. Overnight stay in Dhunche.

After breakfast, we begin our journey back to Kathmandu, driving through scenic landscapes and traditional villages. The drive offers beautiful views of the surrounding hills and valleys, and upon arrival in Kathmandu, you will have the rest of the day to relax or explore the city. Overnight stay in Kathmandu.

Today is dedicated to sightseeing in Kathmandu, where you will visit several UNESCO World Heritage sites. The day includes visits to Kathmandu Durbar Square, an ancient royal palace complex; Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), a UNESCO-listed stupa with panoramic views of the valley; Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest in the world; and Pashupatinath Temple, a sacred Hindu site. This day offers a rich cultural experience and insight into Nepal's heritage.

After breakfast, depending on your flight time, you will be transferred to the airport for your departure. If you have a later flight, you may have some free time for last-minute shopping or exploration in Kathmandu before your onward journey.
