More Information
Hiunchuli Peak, standing at 6,441 meters, is a striking extension of Annapurna South. Though technically moderate, this climb presents challenges due to its complex route-finding and vulnerability to rockfalls. Discovered by Col. Jimmy Roberts, Hiunchuli is one of the three major trekking peaks within the Annapurna Sanctuary, offering breathtaking views of Annapurna I, Machhapuchhre, Hiunchuli, and the surrounding peaks.
The first recorded ascent of Hiunchuli was made by an American Peace Corps Expedition via the southeast face in 1971. Despite its prominence, the peak remains one of the least attempted trekking peaks in Nepal, making it an appealing choice for climbers seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure.
The trekking route follows the classic Annapurna Base Camp trail, passing through lush rhododendron forests, remote Gurung villages, and glacial moraines before reaching the Hiunchuli Base Camp. The ascent includes navigating steep ice slopes and technical rock sections, demanding prior mountaineering experience and high-altitude endurance.
