Annapurna Region
A Journey Through Nepal’s Majestic Landscapes
Nestled in central Nepal, the Annapurna region is one of the most sought-after trekking destinations in the world. Dominated by the breathtaking Annapurna Himal and the picturesque city of Pokhara, this region offers diverse trekking opportunities. There are three major trekking routes in the area: the Jomsom trek, the Annapurna Sanctuary trek, and the Annapurna Circuit trek. Additionally, Pokhara serves as the gateway to numerous short treks ranging from one to four days, including the renowned "Royal Trek."
Though Mustang falls within the Annapurna region geographically, it is subject to special restrictions and is categorized under restricted area treks. With approximately two-thirds of Nepal’s trekkers choosing the Annapurna region, it is one of the most accessible and well-developed trekking areas in the country. Trekkers are rewarded with an incredible mix of snow-capped peaks, lush forests, and culturally rich lowland villages, making for an unforgettable Himalayan adventure.
Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP)
Established in 1986 under the King Mahendra Trust for Nature Conservation, the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) covers an expansive 7,600 square kilometers. Unlike national parks, ACAP was designated as a "conservation area" to promote environmental sustainability while accommodating local communities within its boundaries. This innovative approach fosters a harmonious relationship between conservation efforts and local livelihoods, ensuring both environmental preservation and economic benefits for the residents.
ACAP’s Initiatives and Impact
ACAP implements various programs to promote responsible trekking and environmental awareness. These include:
- Lodge Owner Training: Focuses on sanitation, deforestation prevention, and cultural preservation.
- Fair Pricing Initiatives: Encourages trekking lodges to maintain reasonable prices for food and accommodation.
- Sustainable Fuel Usage: Promotes kerosene as an alternative to firewood, particularly above Chhomrong in the Annapurna Sanctuary and along the Ghandruk-Ghorepani route.
- Sanitation Facilities: Encourages the construction and use of toilets throughout the region to maintain hygiene standards.
- Kerosene Supply Provision: Ensures a reliable supply of kerosene to prevent deforestation in restricted firewood-use areas.
A conservation fee of NPR 650 is required for all trekkers obtaining permits for the Annapurna region, contributing to the sustainability and development of conservation initiatives.
ACAP Trekkers Information & Environmental Centre
Located next to Hotel Lakeside in Pokhara, the ACAP Trekkers Information & Environmental Centre is a valuable resource for trekkers. The center provides essential trekking information and promotes environmentally responsible travel. It also offers:
- Iodine for water purification
- Solar battery chargers
- A "Trekkers Meeting Board" for connecting with fellow travelers
- A battery drop-off facility for proper disposal
By following ACAP guidelines and embracing sustainable trekking practices, visitors can contribute to the preservation of the Annapurna region’s pristine beauty while experiencing one of the most remarkable trekking adventures in the world.
